“Rest Day” by Abraham Walkowitz
I confess to having never heard of this artist until I came across one of his paintings and became captivated by it. I couldn’t leave the store without it.
It’s titled “Rest Day” and signed A. Walkowitz, 1908, in printed letters in black ink.
The Rest Days artwork is a print in a frame with a little cut-out window, that reads “Congress for Jewish Culture” followed by words in what I assume is the Hebrew language. However, it has what look like a few water droplets with ink that ran ever so slightly and that makes me wonder if it is what’s called an aquatint, where the artist paints over a print….
I am selling it as a print because I don’t know for sure.
I’m not an art collector so this may be a treasure for someone. I know the only two items I found online for A. Walkowitz art today were priced at $2,950 and $1,800 respectively and I can’t find Rest Days anywhere for sale online. Both these were original and, of course, a print would be far less. Still, I can’t find this particular print.
The print is in a cheap frame that has a crack in the top of the frame and what appears to be very slight water drop stains on one end of the print.
Since the frame itself appears to be part of the history of this particular print so I’m leaving it in the frame unless the buyer requests that it be shipped without it.
$100.00 plus shipping.

Could you please send me photos of the piece, as many and as varied as possible? Also, exact measurements will help me to properly identify the work.
Thanks so much!

Update on piece….I think I have this sold but payment has not yet arrived. I did get some interesting info from the person who is buying it.
Apparently, this print may be what is called an Aquatint.
I had wondered why the water drops were there if it were a print but had also wondered if it was an original. Now it seems I might have an answer.
According to the man buying the print, who says he saw one like it hanging in a small New York library about 10 years ago, an aquatint is a tint which has been painted with watercolors. That makes sense.
Anyway, I will update the website if the Walkowitz aquatint is in fact sold. If you want to make a back-up offer, just let me know.
Update, August, 2010: Print still available. Have verified it is a print. Still don’t know how you tell if a print has been aquatinted so hoping someone will post that info here.
